Distinguished and Famous people from Huon Valley

🏨 Matthew Evans

Former chef and food critic Matthew Evans became familiar to television audiences through Gourmet Farmer, documenting his move into small-scale farming in the Huon Valley. His work has combined growing food, keeping livestock, writing and examining where meals come from. SBS’s account records the transition from Puggle Farm towards the larger Fat Pig Farm enterprise. The local connection is a working rural life, with the valley providing more than scenery. It became the place where questions about food production were tested through the daily practicalities of farming.

🌿 Deny King

Deny King was born at Huonville in 1909 and grew up on an isolated family holding in the Weld Valley. Home schooling was accompanied by bushcraft, prospecting, track cutting and work with his own bullock team at local timber mills. After fire destroyed the farm in 1934, he joined his father in tin mining near Port Davey. His later home at Melaleuca became a base for mining, botanical collecting and observations that assisted scientists. He also helped initiate recovery work for the orange-bellied parrot. The Huon childhood supplied practical skills that served a remarkably resourceful life in Tasmania’s remote south-west.
